Ticketmaster Appoints New President Amidst Legal Battles

Ticketmaster has announced Saumil Mehta as its new global president, effective November 1st. This leadership change arrives during a critical period for the ticketing giant, as it navigates ongoing legal challenges and aims to enhance its technological capabilities.

Mark Yovich, the current president, will transition to the role of chairman, focusing on long-term strategy and global expansion. Mehta, formerly chief product officer and head of business org at Square, brings a wealth of experience in product development and business operations to Ticketmaster. He will report directly to Live Nation Entertainment CEO Michael Rapino.

Mehta expressed enthusiasm for his new role, stating his vision to create smarter and more intuitive ways for fans to engage with live entertainment. Ticketmaster aims to accelerate its AI transformation under Mehta's leadership, leveraging the technology to empower venues, strengthen ticketing infrastructure against unauthorized sellers, and improve the overall ticket-buying experience for fans. Mehta has also previously advised several AI startups.

Rapino emphasized Ticketmaster's commitment to building a strong foundation for future growth, highlighting Mehta's fresh perspective and expertise in product and technology.

The appointment occurs amidst significant legal pressure on Ticketmaster and its parent company, Live Nation Entertainment. The Department of Justice (DOJ) filed an antitrust lawsuit in May 2024, alleging monopolistic practices that stifle competition in the live music industry. The DOJ is advocating for the separation of Live Nation and Ticketmaster. Live Nation has strongly refuted these allegations.

Adding to the pressure, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) filed a lawsuit accusing Ticketmaster of violating the BOTS Act and collaborating with scalpers by circumventing ticket limitations and enabling resale at inflated prices on the secondary market.

Despite these legal challenges, Live Nation has demonstrated strong financial performance, driven by sustained demand for live music experiences. In the second quarter, Live Nation posted $7 billion in revenue, with Ticketmaster contributing approximately $742 million.
