Ioniq 6 Charges Faster, Rivals Taycan S in Key EV Test

When evaluating electric vehicle performance, acceleration figures like 0-60 mph times don't tell the whole story. While a 2025 Porsche Taycan S might outpace a 2024 Hyundai Ioniq 6 SE Long Range on the track, recent charging tests reveal a surprising twist. The Ioniq 6, during MotorTrend's year-long test, demonstrated impressive charging capabilities, rivaling the Taycan S. This underscores the strength of Hyundai's E-GMP platform, even against Porsche's updated Taycan models.
Back at the Los Angeles HQ, the Ioniq 6 underwent MotorTrend's rigorous EV testing. The results were remarkable: it outperformed nearly every other Hyundai Group EV tested and ranked as the third-fastest-charging EV in terms of cumulative range added after 15 and 30 minutes on a DC fast charger. Only the Taycan S (tested in both Normal and Range modes, with Normal results shown) edged it out slightly.

The Porsche's faster charging is primarily due to its higher average power intake during charging. The Taycan S can take in an average of 258 kW charging from 5% to 80% versus the Ioniq 6's 195 kW, and 124 kW from 5% to 100% versus 105kW. The Porsche also has a higher peak power intake. However, the Ioniq 6 compensates with superior efficiency (153/127/140 mpg-e versus 89/85/87 mpg-e), requiring less energy per mile of range added.
The Ioniq 6 matches the Taycan in achieving an 80% charge in just 19 minutes. Charging to 100% happens quicker on the Ioniq 6, taking 45 minutes, six minutes faster than the Porsche at 51 minutes, despite the Porsche's larger 97.0-kWh battery compared to the Ioniq 6's 77.4-kWh pack.
However, in MotorTrend's 70-mph Road Trip range test, the Taycan S proved superior. The Ioniq 6, with an EPA-estimated range of 361 miles, achieved 292 miles in the test (running from 100% to 5% charge). This is about 19% below the EPA estimate. This number is still good for the car's roughly $43,000 price point. Interestingly, the Ioniq 6's battery performance remained consistent even after 11,400 miles, matching the results of a previously tested new model.
The Taycan S exceeded its official EPA range estimate of 295 miles, recording 302 miles in its default mode and 314 miles in Range mode. It's one of the few vehicles that have surpassed EPA estimates in MotorTrend's testing. The Ioniq 6 boasts a slightly better drag coefficient (0.21 vs. 0.22), enhancing its overall efficiency.
